Reports: Axar Patel likely to be appointed Delhi Capitals captain after KL Rahul rejects offer
KL Rahul was most likely the frontrunner but it does not look like that.
The Indian cricket caravan now transitions from the Champions Trophy to the Indian Premier League (IPL) which is set to begin on March 22. Due to the mega auction in November 2024, the fans and experts have witnessed some big changes in the ten teams.
One of the sides that has seen a major change is the Delhi Capitals who released their previous skipper Rishabh Pant and roped in KL Rahul who was a potential leadership option. Though it was believed that Rahul would be the new skipper according to some reports Rahul has apparently rejected the franchise's captaincy offer on the grounds that he wants to contribute more as a player. The report also states that it is Axar Patel, the vice-captain of India’s T20I team, might take the reins of leadership.
“Yes, Axar Patel is likely to be named as Delhi Capitals skipper for IPL 2025. The franchise had asked for KL Rahul to be the team's captain, but he very much wishes to contribute for the side as a player in the upcoming tournament,” the sources said as quoted by NDTV.
Rishabh Pant to lead Lucknow Super Giants
Though it seems like Rahul might not lead the Capitals in the 2025 season, his Champions Trophy teammate and former DC skipper Rishabh Pant was the most expensive player in the auction bought by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The left-hander was scalped for a massive INR 27 crore.
Pant has also been appointed to lead the LSG franchise in the upcoming tournament and is heavily backed by the team to get great results. The former 2024 T20 World Champion led the Delhi franchise from 2021 to 2024 in 43 matches winning 24 and losing 19 games.
