He used to send the shivers down the bowler’s spine with his batting during his career. The batsman with the better footwork becomes successful in the popular notion in cricket. But Virender Sehwag didn’t bother about all those technical things and still became one of the best batsmen in the world cricket. He is celebrating his 40th birthday today and no wonder the cricketing fraternity is busy wishing him on the special occasion.

Sehwag was unfortunate not to get the farewell game like Sachin Tendulkar did and the flamboyant batsman deserved one for the way he served the Indian cricket for close to 15 years. He amassed as many as 38 centuries across the formats and pummelled the best bowlers in the business.

Sehwag’s international career

Virender Sehwag began his international career as the middle-order and was later promoted as an opener thanks to Sourav Ganguly. It was a career-changing decision for him as the swashbuckling batsman went on to play 104 Test matches in which he amassed 8586 runs at an amazing strike-rate of 82.23 to go with 23 centuries. He is the only Indian to score two triple-centuries in the longest format of the game and only other Indian cricketer to cross the 300-run mark is Karun Nair.

In 251 ODIs, Sehwag was even more threatening scoring 8273 runs at the strike-rate of 104 with the highest score of 219. He also smashed 15 tons and 38 half-centuries in the coloured clothing for India and more importantly was the part of the squad which won the World Cup in 2011.

Even after hanging his boots, Sehwag has kept himself busy on the social media and often leaves his fans in splits with his witty tweets. However, he also hails good performances from the Indian players. On the occasion of his birthday, Sehwag’s former teammates took to their respective social media handles and wished him a happier and healthier life ahead.

Here’s how Twitter wished him:
