'Dismissing a batter is about skill, mankad requires zero skill' – Stuart Broad on the change in the MCC law

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced that running the nonstriker out will now be considered a runout and not Unfair Play. Earlier, this mode of dismissal had come under Law 41 but has now been moved to Law 38. This mode of dismissal has caused a lot of discussions in the world of cricket, with former cricketers and experts of the game coming up with varying theories about this.

“Law 41.16 – running out the non-striker – has been moved from Law 41 (Unfair Play) to Law 38 (Runout). The wording of the Law remains the same”,” read a statement that has been released by the MCC.

And, England fast bowling legend Stuart Broad has taken to Twitter to express his thoughts on this rule change. Quoting the tweet from the MCC, Broad stated that running out the non-striker is always a legitimate mode of dismissal and whether this is an unfair act is subjective in nature.

Broad also added that in his opinion, dismissing a batter requires the bowler to employ some skill, whereas running out the non-striker does not require any skill from the bowler.

“So the Mankad is no longer unfair & is now a legitimate dismissal. Hasn’t it always been a legitimate dismissal & whether it is unfair is subjective? I think it is unfair & wouldn’t consider it, as IMO, dismissing a batter is about skill & the Mankad requires zero skill,” read the tweet from Stuart Broad.
