It is a different ball game altogether when a batsman performs in all formats as it shows his worth to the team because this is a rare skill.

Undoubtedly the best English batter across all formats, Joe Root has been the biggest threat to opposition, especially in Tests. Remaining true to his last name, he is in every sense the root of England’s batting lineup. At merely 30 years of age, he has played more than 100 Tests and is only behind Sir Alastair Cook in terms of runs scored in Tests.

Having represented England 291 times, he has scored 15889 runs including 90 fifties and 37 hundred. The England Test captain has been the only batsman who has shown resilience by scoring runs consistently and putting the opposition on the back foot.

He has also been a good T20I player but intense competition has kept him out of the side. He is England’s rock at No. 3 and has averaged at least 50 in each of the last four calendar years in ODIs. He is already the highest run-scorer for England across all formats but it certainly won’t come as a shock if he ends up being the highest run-scorer in Tests for England as well.
