One of the biggest names in the history of Indian cricket – Mahendra Singh Dhoni has nothing to prove in the gentleman’s game. The veteran has already won every possible accolade the world of international cricket has to offer as a leader.

However, following India’s heart-breaking semi-final exit from the ICC World Cup 2019, rumours started doing the rounds on social media about MS Dhoni’s future, with many believing that the time has come for the wicketkeeper-batsman to bid adieu international cricket.

Meanwhile, India’s head coach Ravi Shastri spoke about MS Dhoni in an interview with India Today and labelled the veteran as a “legend”. Shastri said Dhoni wanted to take a sabbatical from international cricket but he will feature for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. “That guy is a legend. The last thing he will want is to impose himself on an Indian team, having known him. He is wanting to take a break but he is going to play the IPL,” Shastri said.

Ravi Shastri then went on to add saying that how the 38-year-old veteran can put himself in contention for the Australia assignment. He has left the decision to MS Dhoni to decide about his future. “The amount of sport he has played… if he puts himself in contention… if he feels after the IPL that ‘I am good enough to play for India’, don’t mess around with that,” Shastri further said.

Not long ago, MS Dhoni was asked about his future and to which he said, “Don’t talk to me till January.” Needless to say, there hasn’t been any retirement talks by the legend MS Dhoni himself. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had earlier said that Dhoni will get the respect that a player of his calibre deserves and had also ruled out the possibility of the wicket-keeper’s retirement. To sum it up, Ganguly said: “You know, Champions like MS Dhoni don’t finish quickly.”

Dhoni is expected to return to competitive cricket when he sports Chennai Super Kings jersey in the Indian Premier League. However, it will be quite interesting to see how things pan out for MS Dhoni after the IPL 2020. It remains to be unfolded whether he will return to the international arena ahead of the World Cup in Australia or he can call time on his career.
