Reports: Rohit Sharma likely to be appointed India's Test captain ahead of Sri Lanka series
Rohit already has the reins of the ODI and T20I team.
As per the latest developments, Rohit Sharma is set to be named India’s Test captain ahead of the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. The Lankan team is set to tour India later this month for Two Tests and three T20Is, starting from February 24. BCCI selectors now have the onus to finalize a Test captain and the Chetan Sharma-led committee is set to pick Rohit for the role.
For the unversed, the crucial position went vacant after Virat Kohli stepped down following India’s 1-2 defeat against South Africa. Rohit, who has the reins of the ODI and T20I team, has done well in the longest format lately and is the front-runner to take the role. However, the cricket world has been divided on the opener taking the charge of the Test team.
Rohit Sharma set to become India’s all-format captain
Rohit will turn 35 in April this year and has been prone to injuries. Hence, many experts and pundits reckon the selectors should look at someone else for the crucial role. However, as per a report in Cricbuzz, the veteran opener is set to become India’s all-format captain. It has been learnt that a date for the selection committee meeting has not been finalized. However, whenever the selectors meet, they are most likely to give the reins to Rohit.
Meanwhile, it has also been reported that the initially-planned schedule has been twisted for the Sri Lanka series. The tour will now kick-start with the T20I leg on February 24 in Lucknow. The second and third T20I will take place on February 26 and 27 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.
The action will then move to the Test matches. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali will host the first Test. Former skipper Virat Kohli will make his 100th Test appearance in the clash and many eyes will be on him. The clash was earlier planned to take place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, the virtual home ground for Kohli because of his 14-year association with the IPL franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Meanwhile, the Chinnaswamy Stadium will host the second Test.
