Team wise highest totals in ODI cricket : We can find the roots of One Day International (ODI) cricket are not too old and had been sown in the 20th century as we approached 1971. In this short while (55 years) that ODI has been played it has evolved quite a bit. From the earlier 60 over’s contest; now it is a 50 over’s per side match. Not only the duration but the scenario, energy, competence with which it is played today is un-matched. Eight or ten years from now, as the Twenty 20 cricket was slowly developing it was a different ball game and today what we see is a mixture of the control and testing part of the longer format and the explosion of its shortest version. We have recorded the highest team totals, individual scores and unbelievable chases in the latest era. So here we have the team wise highest totals in ODI cricket. The top 10 ODI ranked team are in order of their rank, read along. 10. Zimbabwe 351-7 vs Kenya: Zimbabwe’s highest ODI team total is 351/7 against Kenya. (Photo Source: AFP) Zimbabwe was on their tour of Kenya, playing the 2nd ODI of the series at Mombasaon on the 29th January, 2009. A steady start to the innings got them close to hundred runs in the first 20 over’s for the loss of a couple of wickets. The middle order took over from there and played one of the best we have seen form them in some years. Matsikenyeri, Waller and Chugumbura all three of them scored half-centuries. This took their score close to the 350 run mark which was never achieved in their ODI history. 30 extra’s contributed and at the end of 50 over’s Zimbabwe had 351 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets. With the help of which they beat Kenya by 151 runs. 9. Bangladesh 329-6 vs Pakistan: Bangladesh 329-6 vs Pakistan. Bangladesh achieved their highest team total against the strong Pakistan team in the Dan Cake ODI Series, 2015. The match was played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh, it will be a memorable match for the team. Opener Tamim Iqbal and Wicket-Keeper Mushfiqur Rahim both scored centuries to take the team total to 329/6 against Pakistan 8. West Indies 372/2 vs Zimbabwe West Indies 372/2. They won the toss and elected to bat first, the first strike of the game went into the African teams favour as opener Dwayne Smith departed for a not. From the third ball of the innings it was a Chris Gayle show and his partner Marlon Samuels supported him perfectly to get the team to their highest innings total. In this match Gayle hit the 1st ODI double ton by a West Indian, the very first by a non-Indian and the absolute first in the ICC World Cup history. He scored 215 in that knock as Samuels stayed unbeaten for 133. At the end of 50 over’s WI had put up 372 on the board against 2 wickets. The team hit 19 sixes and 21 fours in this game. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Pakistan in the 5th match of the Asia Cup 2010, reached their highest team total in this ODI cricket against Bangladesh. Both Pakistani openers Imran Farhat and Shahzaib Hasan scored half centuries, middle order batsman Umar Akmal also contributed 50 runs to the total. The man with a huge image Shahid Afridi also came to the party as he hit 124 runs from 75 balls, this innings changed the game and boosted Pakistan to reach 385-7 in 50 over’s. They won the match by 139 runs. 6. New Zealand 402-2 vs Ireland: New Zealand’s highest ODI total is 402/2 against Ireland. Though Ireland are a non-test playing nation and do not make a part of the full teams under the International Cricket Council (ICC). But whatever cricket that they have played at a noticeable stage has been impressive and to put up a score like 402 for the loss of just two wickets against them should not be underestimated. The kiwi openers James Marshall and Brendon McCullum were up for it right from the start and both of them scored big hundreds 161 and 166 respectively, and in the end New Zealand won the match by 290 runs. 5. England 444-3 v Pakistan: England. (© Getty Images) England was playing Pakistan at home in the 3rd ODI of the series played at Trentbridge. After a poor start by the England opener Jason Roy, Alex Hales came up with a solid, consistent hundred (171 off 122 balls), skipper Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Jos Buttler hit a half-century as well. Jos Buttler coming in at number 4 scored one of the finest knocks we have seen from this youngster, his 91 off just 51 balls took England to a superior 444-3. England’s No.3 batsman Joe Root scored an 86-ball 85 runs and captain Eoin Morgan also came up with a 27-ball 57 runs. Alex Hales’ 171-run score is the highest ever individual score by an England player in the ODI cricket history. England’s total of 444/3 is also the highest ever total posted by a team in One Day Internationals. 4. Sri Lanka 443-9 vs Netherlands: Sri Lanka the Asian giants hold the record for the highest team total in ODI cricket. (Photo Source: Charly Booker) Sri Lanka the Asian giants hold the record for the second-highest team total in ODI cricket, they created history it in this match as they scored 443-9 against Netherlands. The Netherlands got an early break through but the big man Sanath Jayasuriya caused maximum destruction with his fearless, masterstroke innings of 157 at run a ball. Batting in the middle order Dilshan too scored a hundred (117) and contributions from others helped them reach this massive score in the end of 50 over’s. It was never Netherlands game and in the end, they fell 195 runs short of the target. 3. South Africa 439-2 vs West Indies: South Africa’s highest ODI total is 439/2 against West Indies. (Photo Source: Gallo Images) South Africa hold the record for the highest successful run-chase in ODI cricket when they achieved an unbelievable feat against Australia at Johannesburg as they chased down the mammoth 434 runs target. This is another super fine performance by the cricket powerhouse. Against the West Indies playing at the same stadium, South Africa put 439 runs on the board for the loss of 2 wickets. All of their top three got hundreds and mind you those were not just triple figures but huge ones. Hashim Amla scored 153, Rilee Rossouw 128 and AB de Villiers fell one short of one hundred fifty for 149. South Africa won the match by a huge margin of 148 runs. 2. (Photo Source: BCCI) The Indian team right from the start of their cricket has been the batsmen stuffed team and has produced legends at regular intervals. This match is important in multiple ways one, this till date remains as the highest team total put up by India 418-5 and another for Virender Sehwag, who became the second man after compatriot Sachin Tendulkar to hit a double hundred in ODI cricket. He better the latter’s record and scored 219 runs in his 208 balls stay in the middle. It stood as the highest individual score in ODI cricket until India’s Rohit Sharma bettered it with his 264 vs Sri Lanka. India won the match by 153 runs registering one of their biggest ODI wins. 1. Australia batting first got to a start one had never seen happen in the history of 50 over’s cricket. On the 12th of March 2006, history was written as this was the then highest team total in ODI cricket and South Africa made it even more remarkable by the reply they led in the second innings successfully chasing down this Mount Everest high total. Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich hit half centuries at the top but it was the man Ricky Ponting’s innings of 164 from 154 balls that made this possible. Mike Hussey played well for his 81 and in their allotted over’s Australia posted 434 on the board. South Africa won the match in closing moments with just one wicket in hand.
