Top 5 Batsmen with most runs in a single edition of Ranji Trophy

The premier domestic tournament of India, the Ranji Trophy, is the breeding ground for young and promising cricket talent in India. To shine in Ranji Trophy, one has to stand out. And what better way than scoring heavily? Only 15 players have scored in excess of 1000 runs in a single edition since the tournament started way back in 1934. Mumbai won the recently concluded Ranji Trophy 2015-16, kudos to scintillating starts given by their in-form batsman ShreyasIyer. He piled up runs and did it in style. So who else have done this before? Here are top 5 batsmen with most runs in a single edition of Ranji Trophy: 5. Kedar Jadhav – 1223 runs (2013-14): (Photo Source: ESPNcricinfo Ltd) Kedar Jadhav was the star of the season for Maharashtra in the 2013-14 edition of Ranji Trophy. The wicketkeeper-batsman amassed 1223 runs in 17 matches, across 11 matches, at a highly impressive average of 87.35. His top score of the season was 204 that he scored against Hyderabad. He impressed everyone with 6 tons to his name in the season and ended up as the leading run scorer of the 2013-14 season. His efforts took Maharashtra to the finals of the tournament. He smashed a ton in the final against Karnataka too, but in vain. 4. Wasim Jaffer – 1260 runs (2008-09): Wasim Jaffer. (Photo Source: Fotocorp) The former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer is the overall leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy cricket. Jaffer led Mumbai from the front to grab the title in two successive seasons. He was at his best particularly in 2008-09 and scored 1260 runs in 10 matches at an average of 84 including 4 tons and 5 fifties. The season is also remembered for his majestic triple ton, 301, that he scored against Saurashtra in Chennai. 3. Vijay Bharadwaj – 1280 runs (1998-99): Vijay Bharadwaj. (Photo Source: ESPNcricinfo Ltd) The former Indian all-rounder who represented India in 3 Tests and 10 ODIs, Vijay Bharadwaj was a key member of the Karnataka Ranji team in the 1990s. He made his debut in 1994, but made a mark in the 1998-99 season when he scored 1280 runs in 10 matches at a staggering average of 106.66. He had 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries under his belt in the season. His highest score was 200, which came in a match against Kerala. He was phenomenal with the ball too, as he picked up 21 wickets and helped Karnataka ease past Madhya Pradesh in the finals of the tournament. Owing to the performances in the tournament, he received a national call. 2. Shreyas Iyer – 1321 runs (2015-16): (Photo Source: Twitter) Having played in 11 matches in the 2015-16 season of Ranji Trophy, Shreyas Iyer ended as the leading run-scorer. He was at his consistent best and scored 1321 runs at an average of 73.38. Iyer fell just 95 more runs short of VVS Laxman’s record for the most runs in a Ranji season. On the big night of the final Iyer scored a classy 117, one a wicket which had lot of help for the bowlers and where their bowlers ran over Saurashtra twice in two days. Iyer’s form was phenomenal throughout the tournament and the 20-year-old scored 4 centuries and 7 fifties in the season with the best of 200. 1. VVS Laxman – 1415 runs (1999-00): VVS Laxman. (© Getty Images) The legendary Indian batsman, VVS Laxman, had made the tournament his own in 1998-00 by amassing a mammoth 1415 runs in just 9 matches. After being dropped from the national side in 1999, Laxman made a strong statement by singlehandedly taking Hyderabad to the finals of the Ranji Trophy. With 8 hundreds to his name in the season at an average of 108.84, Laxman certainly was a nightmare for the bowlers. He scored a gritty 111 in the finals against Mumbai, but that wasn’t enough for his side to lift the silverware. His best performance came against Karnataka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium when he scored a marathon triple century, 353 studded with 52 boundaries and 2 sixes.
