Top 6 Teams with longest unbeaten streaks at home in ODIs

In cricket, home advantage is quite important. Unlike football, where the home advantage means the crowd backing you, in cricket, it extends further to even the pitch and playing conditions being rolled in your favor. Traditionally home teams have dominated Test arena while the ODIs are more of a level-playing field. Today, however, we shall look at some teams that have had great home-runs in 50 overs cricket. Teams with longest unbeaten streaks at home in ODIs. 6. England – 14 games (6-7-2011 to 24-8-2012): England. They started 2011 against the co-hosts of the World Cup 2011, Sri Lanka, the same team that knocked them out of the World Cup. After being 2-1 down in the series, a spirited performance from their pace quartet of Broad, Dernbach, Anderson and Bresnan started England’s unbeaten home streak. During this period, England whitewashed the then World Champions India, West Indies and the mighty Australians. Their streak was eventually broken by South Africa on 28th August 2012 on the back of a classic Hashim Amla 150. 5. South Africa – 14 games (13–1–1996 to 29–3–1997): South Africa. (© Gallo Images/Getty Images) South Africa are known for being the most dominant side at home in all forms of cricket. So it wasn’t a surprise when they went unbeaten in ODIs at home for a straight year. Their 14 games unbeaten streak started with a very closely fought 3-wicket win over England from then on, there was no looking back. They won that series 6-1. During the period, they won Standard Bank tri-series between South Africa, India and Zimbabwe. A very strong Australia though ended their streak in a closely fought series which the South Africans lost 3-4. 4. South Africa – 16 games (2-2-2005 to 3-3-2006): South Africa. This time in a different era, under a different captain, however, there were quite a few similarities with their last unbeaten home streak this time too their streak began against England with a tie. They then whitewashed Zimbabwe and New Zealand. This time around as well, it was Australia who broke the streak in a series that will forever be remembered for thrilling run-chase where South Africa chased down 434 at Johannesburg. 3. Sri Lanka – 17 games (21-2-1996 to 26-1-1998): Sri Lanka. (Photo by PRAKASH SINGH/AFP/Getty Images) Until the early 1990s, Sri Lanka were perceived to be just another team that plays the World Cup, that perception though changed during the 1996 World Cup where the pinch hitting by Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitarana went on to change the way teams batted in the first 15 overs. They went on to win the 1996 World Cup, not many people would’ve even given them a chance before the tournament. From the start of the World Cup against the Zimbabweans, for almost 2 years, Sri Lanka remained unbeaten in ODIs at home and were finally beaten by India later that year. 2. West Indies – 18 games (19-3-1986 to 3-3-1990): West Indies. West Indies under the great Sir Viv Richards, were undefeated for 4 long years at home. They started this streak against England, next up they white washed Pakistan, India and England. The players they had during this era was quite enviable and probably one of their best eras. It was post this that the slide of the great West Indies cricket started. 1. Not having lost a single game at home since the series in 2014 against the Proteas, Australia are on the verge of extending this record and making it the longest streak ever. During this period, Australia won the 2015 World Cup as well, where they were spectacular. And even though the last year saw retirements of Mitchell Johnson, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin among others, Australia still are quite a dominant side at home.
