Sri Lanka won against Afghanistan by four wickets in the first match of Super 4, Asia Cup 2022, in Sharjah on September 3, Saturday. Afghanistan, on the other hand, faced their first loss of the tournament, and a stunning fifty by Rahmanullah Gurbaz went in vain. It was Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka who won the toss and put Afghanistan to bat first.
The Afghanis began the innings, scoring 49 runs for the loss of one wicket in the six-over powerplay. Opening batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz starred with the bat with a splendid knock of 84 runs off 45 balls, with four fours and six sixes. Ibrahim Zadran, at number three, played a valuable hand of 40 runs off 38 balls, and Najibullah Zadran’s cameo of 17 runs off 10 balls helped the side go past 170.

The pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers was spinner Maheesh Theekshana, who finished with one wicket for 29 runs in four overs. His fellow spinner Wanindu Hasaranga also bowled a tidy spell of none for 23 runs in four overs. Sri Lanka, needing 176 runs to win the game, required a record chase at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. They were off to a flyer in the first six overs, scoring 57 runs without losing a wicket. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis laid the foundation, with knocks of 35 runs off 28 balls and 36 runs off 19 balls respectively.
Danushka Gunathilaka’s innings 33 runs off 20 balls in the middle steadied the ship, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s blistering 31 runs off 14 balls completely took the game away from Aghanistan’s grasp. Hasaranga also played his part with an unbeaten cameo of 16 runs off 9 balls. Sri Lanka completed the chase in 19.1 overs with four wickets in hand.
Afghanistan’s star spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman starred with the ball, picking up two wickets for 30 runs in four overs. Skipper Mohammad Nabi also had a decent spell, taking one wicket for 34 runs in four overs. Rashid Khan had a forgettable outing, as he finished with a spell of one wicket for 39 runs.
