The second Test between New Zealand and Australia at the Hagley Oval, in Christchurch, continued to swing from one side to another on Day 3 as both teams fought with all their might.

The Kiwis began the day at 134/2, having taken a lead of 40 runs. Tom Latham departed for a well-compiled 73 after the hosts added 21 runs to their overnight score. Two of New Zealand's most reliable batters in recent times, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell joined forces and they stitched a 123-run partnership off 191 balls. However, both players departed in quick succession and Tom Blundell also couldn't last long. From 278/3, Tim Southee's men slipped to 296/6 and were in a spot of bother.

Glenn Phillips and Scott Kuggeleijn came to the aid of New Zealand as they added 53 runs for the 7th wicket. The latter was the more aggressive player in the partnership as he scored 44 off just 49 balls. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 372 as Pat Cummins stood out with a four-for. Nathan Lyon also bowled well to finish with three wickets.

The Aussies needed 279 runs to win the match. Matt Henry, who has been exceptional in the series, gave the home side their first breakthrough in the eighth over as he got the better of Steve Smith. Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 90 in the first innings, departed in the second over, caught and bowled by Ben Sears. Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green were dismissed by Henry and Sears, respectively as Australia were reeling at 34/4.
