Twitter Reactions: England pick three wickets to keep Australia under check on a rain curtailed day in Sydney
Australia were 126/3 at stumps on rain-curtailed Day 1 of 4th Ashes Test.
Unlike the first three Tests of the ongoing Ashes 2021-22, Day 1 of the fourth game saw England putting up an impressive show. At stumps, Australia were 126/3 with Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja being the two unbeaten batters. Considering the proceedings of the opening day, it would be safe to say that the game is in balance and both teams would like to gain momentum on Day 2.
It must be noted that Aussies have already clinched the five-match series 3-0, having won all the previous games. Hence, the Three Lions have nothing but pride to play for. As the visitors struggled big time in this series, not many back them to turn the tables around at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Nevertheless, Joe Root’s men would be pretty pleased with the proceedings of the opening day.
Earlier in the game, Australia won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Openers David Warner and Marcus Harris put up an impressive show once again and added 51 runs for the first wicket. While Warner fell prey to Stuart Broad for 30, Harris joined forces with the current top-ranked Test batter, Marnus Labuschagne.
Two quick wickets brought England back in the contest
The duo tackled the red cherry with precision and took Australia past the 100-run mark. At 111/1, the hosts looked firmly in command. However, James Anderson and Mark Wood struck and removed both set batters in no time. Just when England looked back in the game, the heaven gates got open and the day’s play got abandoned.
As the SCG track has been pretty good for batting so far, Australia would want their remaining batters to put their hands up and post a substantial score. Steve Smith has been among the runs lately and he’ll possess the greatest threat to the England bowlers. Comeback man Usman Khawaja also needs to make a significant mark as Travis Head is all but likely to be available for the next contest.
As far as England are concerned, their batters haven’t clicked in this series. Hence, they must look to restrict the Aussies to a mediocre total. All in all, some exciting action is on the cards.
