Twitter starts Virat Kohli vs MS Dhoni debate after India's loss to New Zealand in WTC Final
Virat Kohli will again get a chance to rectify his captaincy record in ICC events during the T20 World Cup 2021.
Virat Kohli’s failure to win an ICC trophy yet again has sparked a captaincy debate between him and MS Dhoni. This is the 32-year-old’s third loss as a captain in an ICC event. The first loss came in Champions Trophy Final against Pakistan in 2017, the second came in the year 2019 in the 50-Over World Cup against New Zealand and the last one came against the same team in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
Kohli won an ICC trophy as a player in the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy in 2013 under Dhoni. Sadly, India under Kohli is yet to cross the finishing line. Few even felt that Kohli should be relieved from captaincy duties and concentrate just on his batting.
Coming to the WTC Final loss, India collectively failed in the batting department against a quality New Zealand bowling attack. The Men in Blue posted 217 and just 170 in the second innings which was not enough, as New Zealand chased the target with eight wickets remaining. This is just the second victory for the Kiwis in the ICC events after bagging a title way back in 2000 in the Champions Trophy.
Fans compare MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli after the WTC Final loss
Kohli took over the captaincy from Dhoni in 2014 in red-ball cricket Down Under and since then has gone on to win consistently by playing brilliant cricket. His team defeated Australia in their own backyard in 2018-19 and also defeated West Indies abroad in 2019. The only hurdle remains in South Africa as India is yet to win a series in that part of the world. Kohli’s aggressive leadership quality and backing the pacers were appreciated by all.
But for fans that is not enough as it seems, as they want an ICC trophy under Kohli’s captaincy. Dhoni is the only captain to win all the ICC trophies – T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup, and Champions Trophy. However, Virat Kohli will again get a chance to rectify his captaincy record in ICC events during the T20 World Cup 2021.
