It will not be wrong to say that the excitement of IPL starts from the auction itself. The IPL auction decides the fortunes of cricketers from all over the globe as IPL has made careers of many well-known cricket players. From unknown faces becoming millionaires to big names going unsold, the IPL auction has seen it all.

The 15 seasons of IPL have seen so many bidding wars and the franchises fighting to get their favorite player. The all-rounders are the ones who get most of the attention from the franchises. Yuvraj Singh is the player who has earned the most from the auction. Virat Kohli is the only player who has played all the seasons of IPL but has never been part of the IPL auction.

Over the years, the auction has given the game of cricket some most exciting and beautiful stories. 2022 will see the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League and the auction for the same took place on the 12th and 13th of February. The auction again was very exciting as it was bigger than every year’s auction. The upcoming season will see two brand new franchises becoming part of the IPL. Here is a list of-

Most expensive player in each year’s IPL so far

2008:- MS Dhoni (9.4 CR)

In the inaugural IPL auction, MS Dhoni was the costliest player which is not very surprising. The Chennai Super Kings bought him for 9.5 crores. That was the starting phase of the tournament and it was not as bigger as it is now. And now 15 years later, MS Dhoni is the face of the Chennai Super Kings. The “Captain Cool” has led them to four IPL titles.

MS Dhoni’s contribution has been very precious for CSK. MS has played 220 IPL games and has scored 4746 runs at an average of 39.55. He played for Rising Pune Supergiants when CSK got banned from IPL for two years. Chennai city loves MS Dhoni and he is like an adopted son to the city. The 2022 season might be the last IPL season for the veteran.

2009: Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff (9.8 CR)

In 2009, the two Englishmen were the ones with the highest bid. Chennai Super Kings bought Flintoff and Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Pietersen for 9.8 crores. The second IPL season took place in the lands of South Africa. The IPL title was sealed by the Deccan Chargers in 2009. The RCB were the runners-up but Kevin’s performance was ordinary.

Kevin Pietersen only managed to score 93 runs in six matches. He was not able to do justice with the amount he received at the auction. On the other hand, Andrew Flintoff got to play only three games for CSK and scored 62 runs, and picked two wickets. Both of them were match-winners for England but their respective franchises might have regrated from offering him that amount of money.
