A total of eight franchises lavishly spend money in the auction to rope the big players in order to get their hands on the prestigious trophy.
Indian Premier League is one of the biggest cricket carnivals that is organized annually in the country. Today, it has turned into a talent producing mill for every nation as a plethora of overseas players come down in this tournament to showcase their talent. The cash-rich league has certainly changed the dimensions of international cricket.
This tournament gives everything to a player that he craves for like financial security, a stage to perform and many more. Even the fans also eagerly wait to watch their favourite players from different countries to come under one roof and play for the same team.
A total of eight franchises lavishly spend money in the auction to rope the big players in order to get their hands on the prestigious trophy. Bidding huge amount on a popular player sometimes pays off and sometimes it backfires.
In the last 12 seasons of IPL, many big players played in this league like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Adam Gilchrist, Graeme Smith and many more. They might have proved their mantle in the shorter format league on the back of some brilliant performances with the bat before bidding adieu to cricket.
Meanwhile, there were players that were a big hit in international cricket but flopped in this cash-rich league. However, they kept on getting a hefty amount in the auction. Although they turned out to be quite overrated in terms of the amount that was being placed against their name.
Let’s check out the five overrated players in the history of Indian Premier League:
1. Yuvraj Singh
IPL came into the picture in 2008 when Yuvraj Singh was playing in the form of his life. There was a strong buzz around his name as ‘Yuvi’ had smacked six sixes in an over off England pacer Stuart Broad in T20 World Cup. And, he got weightage of the same fact in IPL auction and he was bought by Kings XI Punjab at a whopping fee of around INR 6 crores. But he failed to justify his worth with the bat. After four poor seasons, he was released by KXIP. He went onto play for the now-defunct franchise Pune Warriors (2011), who roped him at a whopping sum of INR 8.28 crores.
Later on, he emerged as the top earner in the auction in 2014 and 2016. Firstly he was bought by RCB at a price of 14 crores followed by Delhi Daredevils, who splashed 16 Cr for Yuvraj Singh. In his last IPL, MI also tried to put money on the dark horse as he was bought at a fee of INR 1 crore but he couldn’t utilise his last opportunity to the fullest.
In the end, Yuvraj said adieu to all forms of cricket after getting flopped to perform with the bat in every form of cricket. It looked like IPL was unlucky for the Indian all-rounder as he never got a great season with the bat as far as his ability and talent is concerned. In the overall IPL career, he has scored 2750 runs in 132 matches with the help of thirteen fifties.
