3 players who can get Pakistan’s ODI captaincy
After Babar’s resignation, these three names are favourites to receive the ODI captaincy baton.
Following Pakistan’s World Cup 2023 debacle, there was massive pressure on Babar Azam to resign from captaincy and the 29-year-old stepped down as the skipper across all formats on November 15. Following this, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Shaheen Afridi as the T20I) captain while Shan Masood has been given the Test reins.
Pakistan’s ODI captaincy post is still vacant and the PCB won’t be in a hurry to select their new skipper as the Men in Green will play their next one-day match in November 2024 in Australia. After Babar’s resignation, some names are favourites to receive the captaincy baton.
Here are the three players who can get Pakistan’s ODI captaincy:
3. Fakhar Zaman
Fakhar Zaman has been active in ODI cricket since June 2017 and in his six-year career, he has scored 3492 runs with 11 tons and 16 fifties for his side in 82 ODIs. The southpaw is the only Pakistan stalwart to score a double hundred in ODI cricket, with his 210-run knock against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club.
Noting the 33-year-old’s international experience, the Pakistan team management might believe in him for the leadership role. Back in 2019, Fakhar led his Pakistan Super League (PSL) side Lahore Qalandars in five games of the competition, in which his team won only one and lost four. His captaincy record isn’t decent but his batting credentials and experience is something that can draw the PCB’s attention.
