T20 WC 2022: 10 Indian players who are certain to be picked in the squad

When it comes to appraising a player’s current form and player selection for the T20 World Cup, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most influential element. Since its debut in 2008, the IPL has produced a lot of players who have not only represented their country but also gone on to achieve success. Even though the T20 World Cup 2022 is almost six months away, it goes without saying that the IPL 2022 will play a significant role in identifying the players who will be challenged over the following 4-5 months leading up to the ultimate showdown in October. This is his first T20 World Cup as a captain and the Mumbai-born cricketer will leave no stones unturned to make it memorable. While Rohit Sharma’s present form in the ongoing IPL 2022 has not been satisfactory, the 33-year-old is a different beast when it comes to playing for the country. With pace and bounce on offer, Rohit will fancy his chances against the new ball and once he gets going, there are not many who can stop him. Rohit has played 125 Twenty20 Internationals for India, scoring 3313 runs at an average of 32.48. The right-handed batter has a remarkable strike rate of nearly 140. While playing for India in the shortest version of the game, the Indian skipper has 26 fifties and four centuries to his credit and will hope to add more to his tally when they travel to Australia later this year. 2. The former India skipper has been going through a rocky patch with the bat in the last few years and will be keen to get his Midas touch back by the time the global T20 event commences. Kohli is known to bring out his best in challenging conditions and Australia remain his favourite country to deliver his A-game. The 33-year-old is likely to bat at No.3 and a lot will depend on how he fares with the bat throughout the competition. Kohli has 3,296 runs at a remarkable average of 51.5 in 97 T20Is, according to his statistics in the shortest format of the game. He also boasts a healthy strike rate of 137.68. The right-handed batsman has 30 career half-centuries. Kohli will look to go all guns blazing in the T20 World Cup and make it a memorable one. 3. KL Rahul KL Rahul. Unless there are any injuries, the pair should continue to open for India in all games. The 29-year-old has evolved as a player over the months and will play a critical role in the tournament with Kohli and Rohit. The Karnataka-born cricketer has been in decent touch in the ongoing IPL 2022, playing for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and will hope to continue the same job. Rahul has played 56 T20 international matches for India, scoring 1831 runs at an incredible average of 40.68 and a strike rate of 142.49. In the shortest version of the game, Rahul has also hit 16 fifties and two centuries for India. 4. Rishabh Pant Rishabh Pant. Since the departure of Indian superstar MS Dhoni, the 24-year-old batsman has had a constant presence on India’s short-overs team. Pant, who is known for his daring style, will be an important player for India in the global T20 event. The cricketer from Delhi has featured in 43 T20I matches, scoring 683 runs with a strike rate of 24.39. The batsman has a terrific strike rate of 125.78 and three half-centuries to his account. Pant’s highest score while playing for the men in blue is 65 runs. Rishabh Pant will be a vital cog in the middle order on those fast and bouncy tracks. If he manages to live up to his potential, Rohit Sharma and Co. will have a fair chance of bringing the elusive trophy back home for the first time since 2007. 10. Suryakumar Yadav Suryakumar Yadav. The 31-year-old is a versatile player who can bat at the top of the order and can also help his team finish strong in the death overs. The Mumbai-born cricketer has played 14 T20I matches for India, scoring 351 runs at an average of 39. The right-handed batter has a strike rate of 165.56, making him a dangerous hitter. He also has four half-centuries to his name. In the IPL, the Mumbai player has also been in outstanding form in the last few years. Despite Mumbai Indians‘ dismal run in IPL 2022, Suryakumar has fared well with consistent scores. He will be one of the favourites to be named to India’s starting XI. 5. Ravindra Jadeja Ravindra Jadeja (Photo source: Twitter) On any given day, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be part of any starting XI. The 33-year-old all-rounder has made great strides in the global arena since starting his career in 2009. Jadeja, who is known for his tight bowling lines and lusty strikes towards the end of innings, will be an integral part of the Indian squad in the T20 World Cup. Although he has had mixed returns in the ongoing IPL 2022, the Saurashtra-born cricketer has had immense success in the international circuit in the last few years. While his bowling is known to one and all, Jadeja has grown as a batter which will come in handy on Australian wickets. Jadeja has scored 326 runs in 58 T20I matches for India, with an average of 21.73 and a strike rate of 124.42. In terms of his bowling, Jadeja has 48 wickets at an economy rate of 7.04. Besides, he is a gun fielder and is arguably the best in world cricket at present. 6. Hardik Pandya Hardik Pandya. Pandya hasn’t played for India since the T20 World Cup in 2021 when the team was eliminated from the group stage. However, Indian supporters would like to see the hard-hitting hitter join the team. The 28-year-old flamboyant all-rounder has returned to action in IPL 2022 and is currently leading the Gujarat Titans‘ side. He has led the team from the front, scoring 333 runs in 10 matches. He has also shared the new ball a couple of times, picking up four wickets. Given that Australia will host the T20 World Cup, Hardik’s inclusion can add immense value to the squad. He has appeared in 54 T20 matches for India, scoring 553 runs with an impressive strike rate of 146.29. In the short version of the game, Pandya has taken 42 wickets at an economy rate of 8.23. 7. However, he was ruled out of the 15th edition of IPL due to injury concerns. Although new to international cricket, Chahar has managed to create a name for himself. His ability to swing the ball in the powerplay will come in handy in Australian conditions. Besides, the Rajasthan all-rounder is also a handy batsman in the lower order. Chahar has 26 wickets at an average of 22.26 in 20 T20I matches. The 29-year-old pacer also bowls at a respectable economy of 8.27 runs per over. Chahar has two fifties for India in the 50-over format to his credit. If India’s top and middle-order falter, he might be a valuable batsman. 8. Jasprit Bumrah Jasprit Bumrah. Apart from bowling crucial overs for India, Bumrah will seek to help his fellow pacers during the game. Bumrah has been a reliable performer for India in both limited-overs and Test cricket. In T20Is, he has taken 67 wickets at an average of 19.89. The right-arm pacer also boasts an economy rate of 6.51 runs per over. On whatever occasion, Bumrah has been the captain’s go-to bowler. He has established himself as a reliable bowler over the years, with a couple of variations in his arsenal, including the toe-crushing Yorkers and deceiving slower balls. 9. Yuzvendra Chahal Yuzi Chahal (Photo source: Twitter) The veteran leg-spinner will most likely be the team’s first-choice spinner in the crucial T20 event. The 31-year-old tweaker isn’t a great ball turner, but his twists and change of pace may fool batters. He has been in significant form in the ongoing edition of IPL and will hope to carry on the momentum into the mega event. Besides, Yuzvendra Chahal will have extra fire in the belly given that he was excluded from India’s T20 World Cup squad last year in the UAE. He is expected to pair up with his spin partner Kuldeep Yadav, who has redeemed himself in IPL 2022. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner is currently the Purple Cap winner in 22 wickets at an economy of 7.25 runs per over and a bowling average of below 15. If Chahal can continue his mojo in the T20 World Cup, the men in blues will have a fair chance of lifting the elusive title.
